I'm going SLQ crazy this week! NGC certification on this one. My goal is to complete my slq set with all at least 4 partial digit dates. This 23-s makes it easily.

You nailed it Brian! I can understand why some graded it F-15, since the date shows some areas of weakness, but it's quite strong compared to many. This date is notorious for being one of the weakest dated slqs, and very difficult to find with a full date, and the other details are solid VF+, so I think NGC was fair giving it a 20. It is not uncommon to find 1923-s slqs with just as much detail as portrayed here with the "192" completely obliterated.

My fault for not doing some research beforehand. I see what you mean. http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_tr...l-CategoriesMy first thoughts were vf20 but the date was messing with me. Based on a quick search of the coin you have a very nice example there.

I got a 1923s SLQ in about VF+ from a dealer's scratch box many years ago.
You must remember that I am in Australia. The dealer's main business was and (still is) stamps and Royal Australian Mint products. Neither of us at the time paid any attention to it's rarity. I just picked it up for a dollar because I liked it. The date was very clearly readable, and there was only obvious wear restricted to the high points. It was certainly one full grade better than the one pictured here.
I sold it about eight years later and obviously at that time, I fully appreciated it's value. Nevertheless, the coin only sold at auction for about 25% of what it would have realised in the U.S. I remember it selling at the time for AUD $50. (about U.S.$30 at the time).
In hindsight I should have kept it, but I was at the time, into ancients and I still am , except that I have widened to collecting all world coins from ancient times to about 1950. That 1923s SLQ would have sat nicely in the U.S. part of my collection!

Yep, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this in a VF-25 slab with the four digits. This looks better than my PCGS F-15 1921 did.

Looks better than my 27-S that PCGS graded F15.

Yeah, I was confused until I saw what you said about the weak date, mine that's barely F-12 doesn't have nearly the detail, but the date is much fuller.
