Let's see if we think PCGS did a better job than ANACS did with the 1859. Here is an 1862 cent in a problem free PCGS holder that I just acquired for my certified type set. How would you grade this one?

OK! I will take a first stab at it. MS 62. Looks RB, don't know if the color from the picture is right.

PCGS doesn't assign colors to the copper nickel cents. The coin is more lustrous in hand than in the photos with a reddish hue.
Rest in Peace

Can't quite tell from the photos I'll say MS-62 but could also be an AU-58

And the PCGS grade is:

1862-Indian-Head-Cent---You-Vs.-PCGS

This coin has got a lot of eye appeal in hand so I agree with the grade. It is quickly becoming one of my favorite coins in my collection. It is my first MS copper nickel cent and I may be hooked.

Hmmm!
The reverse shield looks to have weak strike that I thought would kept it away from MS-63. This next to Mercury dime is next in my favorite list.

Very nice coin, I agree with MS-63, is that a small Cud on the denticle that the lowest arrow points to?

Same here. I thought the coin had remarkably clean surfaces.

invisibleninja7,

I think it is a die crack that you are referring to.
