I have always had a special fondness for 1799 silver dollars, ever since a high school classmate brought one to school in tenth grade and passed it around. I know nothing about die varieties, but I thought the specialists might want to check this one out.

The wear on the left wing seems odd... It could be a scratch

Details on it look accurate but I don't know the series well enough to look for more advanced markers

Yes there are several different fakes known for 1799. I tried running this one through the Cardinal Foundation's attribution wizard and the varieties it came up with don't match this coin. Of course it is possible I missed something when running the wizard because I couldn't get a good enlargement of the coin.
Well I did some searching on Heritage and it does check out. It's a 1799 B-22, R-5.

It is genuine...... Bolender 22. edited to add: Too late with the info I see, but anyway, there are far more severe die breaks than this one on very early U.S. coins. Very neat and very desirable though...  Edited by zeewool

That reverse on the 1799 is pretty dramatic. The die has split in two and shifted. |

It's here !  Now everyone can see what a really pretty coin it is. I'm glad I took a chance on the auction in spite of the poor photos in the listing. The coin is much better 'in hand' as they say, than in the pics I am posting. The die crack is very dramatic. The toning is attractive. The ribbon legend is complete and the eye of the eagle is visible. These last two were primary considerations for me in my search for one of these early dollars. It is very likely that I will never again spend this much for a single coin.. as long as I can resist the temptation to shop for the 'small eagle' version!  I would appreciate comments on the grade of this coin, as well as links to sites where I can grade it for myself. Thanks to everyone for your input. May your treasure hunts be rewarding.    |
