Hello all - just joined this site after reading multiple posts by a friend of mine on here. I just purchased this 1819 bust half today, and wanted to see how you all think it may grade. I plan on sending it into PCGS upon arrival (well, after I stare at it for a couple days). Thanks!!

Very nice, looks AU-55 or so and appears to be free of any significant hits or hairlines. One potential problem is the bright white centers with the dark peripheral toning. Old silver coins can look like this after they have been dipped to remove all toning, then stored in an album until the edges have re-toned. It is possible PCGS might object to this coin and call it "genuine" due to an old cleaning. As an example, here is the reverse of my avatar coin (1807 bust dime). It has the classic look of a dipped coin with re-toned edges and was judged "cleaned" by PCGS.

vermontensium: Thanks!
Jaobler: Thanks for your input - I was actually a bit concerned about grading for that exact reason. Regardless, I love the look of it - it'd just be nice to get it in a slab of possible. And stunning bust dime by the way!!

It looks like there is real luster still here--which may catch a break at PCGS, like it does on some early coins. I don't know just how "early" Capped Bust Halves are considered, but maintaining original luster should speak volumes for originality. Hopefully it will be enough!

And Jaobler: If my 1807 dime looked like that I would never have sold it. That is an amazing piece.

I agree with Au55-58 as the locks of hair have wear. Super beautiful coin with what looks like original luster to me. I bet it grades.

That is a great looking bust half. I would call it AU58. I'm not sure what a TPG would do with it though.

These are tough for me to grade, so I'm gonna say AU-58... But that grade takes away just how beautiful this coin is ... Almost forgot, to the Community

It will be interesting to see PCGS's opinion on this coin.
I'll say AU-58 to be safe but it is certainly plausible this is MS and weakly struck. If MS, very high grade. 63+.

I'll say 58. Hair looks to have rub but that is likely strike or luster abrasions....though I see slight circulation hairlines on the cheek. Slight luster impairment in fields on reverse...though it might grade 62 or even 63 at PCGS because of the outstanding surfaces.

Thank you all! I'll probably post some new photos once it's come in the mail! And I'll keep you posted as to whether or not it slabs (and what grade if it does) :)
