I will apologize if this has been discussed recently, but I wonder sometimes what MY ideal coin collection would be. I have only been collecting one year, so what I have seen in the Coin World is very limited compared to many of you experienced collectors. However, I take what I have seen here, coin shops, and shows and think about what I want my collection to be one day. It seems like no matter what I add to my collection I am never satisfied. I am always looking for something and when I finally get it, I try to get something better. I roll search when I am broke, but actively search out and buy coins when I have the money. Which brings me back to my original question...
What would be the ideal collection to many of you?
What are your current or future collecting goals?

My ideal collection? Well I've been collecting for about 5 years, and mostly I go for the oldest US coins. I am trying to focus on Barber dimes, but for me, the older the better. I'm not so worried about condition as I am age, but I love those early 1800's Half Cents and halves and such. Of course, they are more expensive when they are older, but for me its the age that makes a coin what it is.

I go set by set. Much like an author will write several stories at once in case writer's block slows one of them down, I am on the lookout for a few different things. I like collections that offer a combination of challenge and accessibility. SBA dollars, for example, aren't that interesting to me: you can buy the whole set on ebay pre-assembled. Mercury dimes, however, you can get all but about 5 dates for the price of silver, then all but a couple of coins can be acquired with a little effort/saving up.

Don't know if I really answered your question, but I figure to keep finding new goals as old goals are completed.

Probably full, mint Dansco albums of Mercury dimes, Standing Liberty quarters, and Walking Liberty halves. I love silver!

I'd also love to flesh out my Ancient Roman Coin collection, but no real goals set for that. Just some nice examples from the various major players would be nice.

Ideal? or White Whale?

Ideal would be everything Eliasberg style.

Some White Whales...

- Series Collection of Seated Liberty Silver Dollars (1836-1873)
- Early drapped Bust Dollars
- Any 19th Century US Gold Set
etc.

Having completed many a set, filled many an album, that aspect of collecting no longer holds much fascination for this oldtimer. I now enjoy the thrill of the hunt for coins, paper and tokens that are unusual; scarce varieties, items to which history can be attached. Yet, another angle for me is finding coins that have eye-appeal, be they Fine ot MS. Each purchase then becomes an adventure as opposed to being a means toward an end ... I find that to be a healthy approach to life in general. Enjoy!

My ideal collection is one I'm just starting now. In the past I've made my own types of collections such as a Liberty Head/Mercury Head/Roosevelt Dime Album. Due to limitations in space in a Whitman Album, had to leave out all proofs, errors, multi dated coins like the 45S and Micro S. Now planning on using those 20 slotted plastic pages and a 3 ringed binder for all Nickels. Shield/Liberty Head/Buffal/Jefferson all in one make my own Album. I have to make a front page called the History of the US Nickel. Again though so as to not make it a massive project, I'll leave out all the proofs and error coins.
That to me would be a real ideal collection.
Might consider the same for odd ball coins such as 1/2 cents, 2 cent, 3 cent, 20 cent pieces too.
With well over 100 normal, every day type of Albums, time to really have some fun.

A complete 10 cent coin collection, with ALL the tough dates - 1822, 1809, 1916D. I look a lot at rarity when coin collecting.

Im new to collecting as well so I'm not sure about long term Goals. For now Id like to focus on acquiring 2 coins from each type/series. So for example, for Quarters Id like 2 coins each of; Bust, Seated Liberty, High Barber, Standing Liberty, Silver Washington, Washington, States, etc. One coin can be vg-fine circulated and the other a proof-like (maybe cleaned) so I can see all the details. Once I accomplish that I will decide what I really like and where to focus.

Good replies so far. I love to hear other collectors' points of view. Every day that I look through my collection, I regret going on hiatus for twenty years. Started collecting at age 10 and now I am 30...I always think about the caliber of collection I could have now had I not stopped at age 12.

Keep the posts coming!

my ideal collection would consist of a full date/mm Morgan set in grades of MS-66 or better. I actually started on this a couple years ago to replace the almost full set in MS-64 I had already built but got a little burnt out on Morgans and started VAMing instead of working on this set

It is the essence of numismatics. Insatiable wants, and never ending quest for upgrading your collection. It's our hobby that has big bearing of value in terms of cost appreciation that also deals with a fruitful investment. While we enjoy the borrowed time of owning coins, we are also guaranteed to make a good income in terms of profit as years will pass by.
Just go for acquiring what your heart tells you to buy, and remember that you can do no wrong about gold and silver ones specially the rare and key dates. Satisfaction goes with the process of buying stage. If you are enjoying the process, then you are on the right track.
I may say that my present gold and silver rarities is already ideal for me as of the moment but who knows, I might go for another types of rarities in the future. What is most important is I enjoy this moment having them right now
So in short notes, ideal collection is based on every collectors happiness and fulfilment...

My ideal collection would be a complete set in MS of the 1915 Panama Pacific Commemorative Gold coins. Both $50, the dollar and $2.50. Ideally with the silver half and still in one of the original frames.
