I picked up this Morgan a couple weekends ago - can't tell if it's MS w/ a number of bag marks and a weak strike, or if it's been circulated... (By the way, I think it is a VAM-18, but this one was my first attempt at determining the VAM of a coin)

I am going to say MS because I do not see anything that would be considered wear on the Obverse. I can't see the Reverse very well because I would need a straight on shot like the Obverse to be able to be 100% sure but I am still sticking with MS with the pictures provided

I think you're right about 18. Look at "LLAR." VAM-20, the other choice, has dramatic doubling of those letters where 18 is much more subtle. VAM-20's doubling will look as strong as the date's doubling; 18 will not.
Very pretty, but based on the obverse my gut tells me "barely circulated" rather than Mint State.

Beautiful coin I agree with SuperDave there is just a touch of rub above the ear so probably AU-58.

I would grade it at a low MS, MS-60 to MS-61.

You're normally more conservative than I, echizento, so it gives me pause to think. I love the photographic character of these images, but they're not easy to base grading opinions on as a result.

Guess I mellowing in my old age Dave . I really didn't see any wear, I think the spot above the eye is a spot and not rub so I went with low MS.

regardless of grade, it is a coin you can be proud and happy to own!

Does anyone else feel like the hits on the obverse look a little smoothed over (like it has seen light circulation?). I feel like bad mark hits are usually sharper around the edges of the hits. AU-59

AU-58 based on the slight dull/dark look of Liberty's cheek. Very close to MS.

I would say AU 55. Looks to be slightly worn on cheek and a touch above the ear. I definitely agree that it is very hard to tell when a coin is extremely close to going one way or the other from one pic. I would not be one bit surprised that if I took a look at it in person my opinion might change.

Thanks all! I've uploaded a couple of more photos. It almost looks like damage above the ear as opposed to just mild wear. There do seem to be a few other lightened spots though at high points.

It looks like lady liberty has taken quite a beating. I don't think there is any wear. The reverse is clear. My guess would be MS62. However when I send coins in for grading they come back two grades lower than I thought or genuine.

I'm generally not into toned coins but this one has some nice light toning giving it some personality. IMHO I'd go 60, hits on the cheek are very distracting, but overall nice one. A keeper.

Nice 8TF. It took some coin contact (obviously). I'd want to see the reverse straight-on, too. The obverse has circulation wear on it, but the coin could still market grade low MS. It's a shot of the dice, really, the way I see it.

Yeah, like that. I'm not even sure I could decide this one if I had it in my hand.
