I am currently building a Dansco Album of Mercury dimes. I am doing this in VF grade in the lower years, 1916-1931 and EF in the later years, except for the key dates which I realize I will have to accept a lower grade due to cost. Looking at my RedBook and also US Coin Facts here on CCF they have this to go by when grading a EF....

"EF40 Extremely Fine:Diagonal bands show only slight wear. Braids and hair before ear show clearly."

When I look at pictures of the Mercury dimes I have a hard time figuring out what is the ear, and what are the braids. Is there a picture that clearly shows what I need to be looking for? In the higher grades I can see hair but the ear and braids I am having a hard time finding.

I kind of like "coin auctions help" (dot) com - they have a page with photos at each grade

Edit: Why was it so annoying to get that link in there?

I have a couple of fully split band Mercuries, common dates. My problem is that there is a big difference in the sharpness of strike between the obverse and reverse.

Does this big difference lower the grade?

If a link is not postable, it is usually because the site belongs to a scumsucking spammer

I have proven that this link is postable, and it is appropriate to the Mewrcury dime.

To Canadian-banknotes: Thanks.

Thanks to all for the websites. I think I see the earlobe at the end of her jawline, still not real clear to me though.
