My recent purchase has inspired me to start collecting with some direction. I've decided to start with an early series. Capped bust halves specifically.

What are some of the most recommended guides I can find to educate myself on this series? Also, fakes. Fakes frighten me to death, modern fakes specifically. The classic fakes may find a place in the collection, as a curiosity. But modern fakes, never.

In short, any and all advise is always appreciated.

The standard reference for Bust Halves is the Overton Book, still available in like the 5000th printing (just kidding about what printing but newer additions are reasonably priced).
For the contemporary fakes from back when they circulated, there is the Davignon book. Both can be found on Amazon by putting in the authors name and searcing

With regard to Overton, the general opinion is that the Third Edition is of higher quality than the Fourth Edition, which is known for errata. I use the Third, and am rarely stumped when attributing Busties.

Looked for the third edition on Amazon. Wow, its over 200 shells. Cheapest I could find the forth edition was for $60. I didn't think they would be that costly. Anyone have a used copy?

Maybe you have a local library where you can check it out? Remember when there used to be libraries?

I only paid $60-ish for my 3d Edition. Keep looking. Google Abe Books; I buy a lot of stuff ffrom them, including my Overton.

There is also the "Ultimate Guide to Attributing Bust Half Dollars" by Glen Peterson and Bust Half Fever by Edgar Souders. Of the two the Peterson book is probably the better choice but neither one is going to be easy or cheap to locate. I know the Peterson book comes in both printed and CD/DVD versions.
