Thread smolders for weeks, then suddenly it's like gasoline was poured on the embers. I see I have some serious catching up to do. First coin: 1698 Austrian thaler, another 'big hair' coin and in Leopold's case, a big lip also. This is a 45mm rolled-die coin, slightly bent from the minting process, and somewhat out-of-round. Note the de-emphasized date that almost gets lost among the amazing details. Second coin: 1696 William the Third crown, ~40mm, a sea salvaged specimen from the wreck of the Association. Third coin: 1694 Salzburg (Austria) St. Rupert thaler, 42m, another rolled-die coin of incredible detail. Keep the gems coming, gang! Three-century-old dated coins are awesome!

Quote: I take it this thread is about old coins from Europe that have a date on them and not the older ancient coins from Rome, for example. The coins can be from anywhere, not just Europe. But since we're up to the 1690's, most of the coin types being minted at that time were being made in Europe. They need to have a date of some kind actually on the coin (not just an "assumed date") and while this date does not need to be in the AD calendar, it does need to correspond to the AD date we're up to. Moving the thread along; we're currently up to 1692. Here are some pics which I uploaded so long ago, they'd expired, so I uploaded them again: Electorate of Brandenburg (later known as Prussia) 1/12th thaler, Magdeburg mint. And yes, this coin really is pink.

Great coin! I will post again when the electricity comes back on. Lots of trees down and damaged power lines here in Massachusetts. Might be several days.

Something interesting about this age is the stark differences in die work between countries. The Austrian Thalers are really impressive for the details they managed to get on the coins. I have a couple years till my next coin.

We can't go past 1689 without some more Gun Money. Here's one I downloaded earlier, and August 1689 halfcrown. It should be noted a curiosity of the calendar at this point. Under the Julian calendar in use at the time, the year count didn't click over until the spring equinox in mid-March. So coins bearing dates "Jan 1689", "Feb 1689" and "Mar 1689" were actually struck in what we would call the year 1690.
