My condolences on the loss of your grandmother.

This story is anything but boring. Are your silver dollars in blue boxes? or are they just loose and unprotected? I think you should go to your local library and start doing some research so that you truly understand what you now own. If you live near a larger city you should be able to find a reputable coin dealer that will be helpful to appraise what you have. Don't be quick to sell. One thing that has me worried is the fact that these coins were kept in an attic. The coin dealer can help you to make sure that your coins are protected. Also as a new coin collector please do not clean or handle the coins directly with you fingers.

Hey everyone! Thanks for all the feedback and kind welcoming. I would reply to some of you individually but I am unsure on how to use the quote option.

The first thing we all said was "how in the world did they get this safe up here"? I really have no idea because it is very heavy. There is no way, the two of them would have been able to do it. It's really awkward because the ceiling is too low, so you can't even stand up straight.

This weekend we are going to put lights up in the attic and do a very thorough search. Just to add, we going to a very thorough search of the entire house.

Another thing that had me thinking is, why wouldnt either of them leave any mention of this safe? Yes there was a letter inside leaving me the coins etc but there wasn't anything else anywhere. What if I didnt go back up and look around? I wouldn't be telling this story. I just find it odd that's all..lol

To answer the above person about the shape of the coins, almost all the coins have never been touched by anyone. It's been in these ' Royal Canadian Mint boxes'. A lot of them contain little white notes that have 'inspected by no.5'

Also, WOW to how much they are worth. Someone in here said almost $15,000! That blows my mind! I really don't know if I will sell them though :( I feel kind of bad selling coins that my grandparents collected for so long....

What do you guys think?

to the Forum!

Triple Wow! Wow! Wow!

You have the most wonderful gift left by a loving Grandparent and I would advise never to sell them until you have become a lot more informed about which ones carry a premium, and which (if any) are run of the mill coins, and may only ever be worth face value, but judging by what you've shown us so far, there won't be many of those type.

Buy some reference books and start reading and learning, so eventually you'll be able to make educated (coin wise) decisions about the future of the coins.

Personally, I would simply not be able to part with any of them if I inherited a similar collection.

If there are any coins you are not sure about, post pictures or scans here in the forum as there are many very knowledgeable members here who will be willing to offer you assistance.

Don't do anything with the coins until you follow the first rule "buy the book". Second rule "educate yourself on coins/banknotes". Then, make a detailed list and search internet on sales of same items for the last couple of years (numismatic value only).

To quote, use reply to topic and put the quoted part between the brackets.

And for the record, I said at least $15,000.

My condolences on your grandmother's passing, and congratulations on your good fortune.

One thing that I'm surprised no one mentioned yet (unless I missed it) is: DO NOT CLEAN ANYTHING! It looks like a lot of the items are sealed, but some were loose or in albums. If any of them have anything on them (dirt, tarnish, etc.), just leave it. Cleaning coins will drastically reduce the value.

What a nice collection of Canadian coins.

make sure you keep these from getting wrinkled, keep them as flat as possible, and give us a list so we can..

Wow that is amazing. Please, as others have said be sure to do your homework before you ever decide to sell. I suggest you hold onto these things for a while (year or so) while you get acquainted with collecting and the value of this collection.
