Friday threw up far more surprises in the form of 17 kg of gold coins dating back to the East India Company period, 18 coins from Napolean's era, precious stones wrapped in silk bundles besides over 1,000 kg of gold in the form of coins and trinkets and a small elephant made of the yellow metal, sources said.

Here's more about it...

As mindblowing as that cache is...imagine that it's the 'tip of the iceberg' regarding metal/gemstone treasures hidden away on the Indian subcontinent. I've read some staggering accounts from the British colonial period. Kashmir sapphires the size of croquet balls, royal clothing weighed down with pearls and Golconda diamonds, etc. It's what attracted westerners to India since the Roman times.

Still... My mind would explode if I saw that wealth.

Incredible story!

"The wealth discovery has raised questions on the shrine's security. As of now, the internal security is managed by the temple employees, but this may be inadequate in the light of the events."

You think?

I'm coming up with 1000 Kilograms = 32000 Troy Oz. of gold = about $48,000,000.00 and 11,000,000,000.00 USD = 7,399,435.07 Troy Oz. of gold or 231,232 Kilograms. I also checked that 50,000,000,000.00 INR = 1,120,573,760.58 USD so I think the total should be $1.1 Billion, but PLEASE, Somebody please check my math, I may be WAY off!

It looks like most of the value of the find wasn't in gold, but still.

Really, check my math, I'm not sure of the numbers. Does R50K cr = 50,000,000,000 Rupees?

@DVCollector : These are just leftovers from what the British managed to take away from India :P
I read that 400-500 years ago 80% of worlds GDP was from India and China. I am sure that there was a lot of trading done with all over the world. Probably how all the Maharajas got all those rock sized diamonds from...

@Yokozuna : There was 1000 kgs of gold in rice trinklets besides 17 kilos of coins and giant gold garlands and rubies and emeralds. I think by Thursday they would release more information about it along with what was found in the yet to be opened cellar. They would most probably never see the light of day again and will probably just locked away in a big giant safe...
Rest in Peace

BBC is reporting $500 Million (USD) worth of Au. Per BBC there are 2 more chambers / vaults to be opened up.

Fwiw - There are other temples in India that get significant amounts of jewelry as donations which is a Hindu tradition that goes back a few hundred years.

As DVC said there are stories about vast amounts jewelry / gold being buried / hidden in India.

You're probably right, but WHY? How many in India go without food or shelter? They could use this in so many ways to help the poor in the Country... and now that the story is out, you know some people will be working on plans to steal all that they can. It's gonna hurt when they open the vaults again in 150 years and they only find a note saying. "Thanks!" *sigh*

Still a great story for all of us to dream about. Thanks brokencompass for sharing it.
