I bought this as part of a large foreign lot, but am having some trouble identifying it. If anyone has an idea of what it is and its value id appreciate any help. There were three of these things in the lot.

Looks like Ethiopia 10 cents, KM 34, with Haile Selassie depicted. Copper. Worth perhaps a quarter - if I'm looking at this one correctly. Should measure 23 mm wide.

I think most Ethiopian coinage are sleepers. One day they'll be sought after. A keeper.

Can you elaborate? Why do you say that?

Because the continent of Africa is so unstable that a country could dissolve or divide overnight.

but why is Ethiopia, in particular, "a sleeper?" Unless you're saying every country in Africa is a sleeper, in which case I'd kinda have to disagree.

[ There is a very cool Bob Marley coin from Jamaica. Quite expensive as I recall; I never did get it. But Haile Selassi is lost to history I'm afraid.

I'm still waiting to hear the case why Ethiopian coins will ever command any kind of a premium relative to other world coins.

I actually have a few of the Ethiopian coins. Love the Lion of Judah design. As for Ras Tafari...greatest title ever! King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Elect of God. Emporer of Ethiopia!....JAH Ras Tafari!

Well I dont think ethiopia is going to disappear anytime soon considering its been around for thousands of years while nearly every other african country is less than 50 years old.
But anyway thanks for the info, I suppose ill keep this one since its the nicest of the three and let the other two go.

It is Ethiopia, but it is a 25 cent piece, copper, Krause #36, dated at 1944, but issued in 1952 and 1953. Sadly, rather common, and not as valuable as the round rim design, sigh. Maybe a $1 on the high side.

Yes egypt and liberia were the only other modern independent african countries that became independent before 1950. Most North African countries have largely the same borders as their predecessor states in the 1800's but underwent a perdiod of ''foreign protection'' before becoming independent again in the late 50's and early 60's. I think Algeria was the only one that had its previous institutions completely dismantled before becoming independent again.
