I found what appears to be an old brass coin while metal detecting. As this was found in a picnic area in Vermont, US, it seems an unlikely spot for what looks like an old coin to appear. Anyone have an idea?

It's a replica of an early Spanish-colonial silver coin. Genuine examples usually look more like this, irregular with missing details but the details that are present are usually quite clear.

I've seen similar replicas before; they often have a clear and distinct seam running right around the rim, as if two half-coins were joined together. Genuine coins don't have this.
