1928 Peace dollar in a junk silver dollar box. Pointed it out several times to the dealer. He said it's yours and a very good one. Said it was worth TPG. At the time, dollars were $28 so I bought the box. A lot of Peace and Morgan dollars. Was the box "salted"? maybe. Has it kept me coming back to him first? Yes. I have spent a lot of money there? You bet. He has made far more money underselling it than he would of if it had been sold for the going rate.

Maybe him or an employee most likely paid $13 or $15 for the coin and threw it in the box. I quess thinking 1923. Regardless, a 1928 Peace dollar in AU @ under $30 has been my best purchase.

$125 FV for $600. I wasn't sure of its value at the time but felt bad after I realized it was almost $4k worth of silver. Oh well, I guess its all good she never complained about it. It was her deceased husbands and I don't think she was very fond of him.

My best deal was a 1940 Canadian quarter found under a dryer at a laundrymat. My wife works there and is always keeping her eyes open for older/unusual coins

A while back a friend of my sons had 2 Morgans. He said he got them from a guy who was going to use them to make a purchase at a convenience store. The clerk wasn't going to accept them so this friend offers they guy 2 one dollar bills to pay for his purchase and he got the coins. Well one was a 21 in X fine grade and the other was 1887 VAM "donkey Tail" in fine condition. Then he said he found a 1951 Franklin half on the ground a few steps away from the local coin shop. Probably someone bought a bunch of circulated silver coins and dropped one on the way out.
Anyway today this kid (hes a kid to me anyway) asked me if I would be interested in buying them. He didn't really know how much they were worth So I looked them up for him. To make a long story short, I told him the 87 VAM was worth more than I could afford right now and that all I had on me was $40.00 I offered that for the 21 Morgan and the 51 Franklin. He was happy with that. I told him he could try ebay for the VAM but he said he was going to keep it for a while. I got a good deal but I sure wish I had this kids kind of luck.

I think this set of Lincoln cents was a steal. With only a few exceptions, every coin from 1937 to 2003 is BU. The first 5 San Francisco minted coins (in the set 1910-S to 15-S) are worth what I paid for the entire set.

I've made some nice purchases on ebay. I bought a GSA 1883 CC Morgan last year for 48 dollars "buy it now".

I picked this dime up in a "lot" and after selling off the chaff from the lot, I have maybe 125 dollars in it.

Chance

Wholesale, retail, markup is a factor in deals, obvious type-os or overlooked mintmarks etc. is a completely different category - IMO.

We suddenly had several customers wanting to sell boxes of expensive trading cards for about half of wholesale. Media Play hired people who can barely run a scanning cash register, and had no product knowledge, so when the machine rang up box bar codes at the same price as single packs, they cheerfully sold them for 3% of retail--by the shopping cart full.

My most recent awsome steal was a big lot of various US coins, mostly silver! It was the strangest purchase ever, since I just went on gut instinct The seller had no pictures or nothing, the ad only said small collection US coins. After a bit of mailing, and some more info and some pictures... I made a ridiculous offer off €20 (the morgan alone would be that). He thought it was too low, I agreed and thought drop €50 = $67. He agreed, and I don't think he knew it was a lot of silver content. All in all it was just below 200 grams of silver (little over 6 ounces) All on gut instinct and a little perseverance
And that was just my most recent buy

This shouldn't count but...

I paid 10 cents for a 1982 No P dime (got it in change). Nice solid AU example. Three years ago I sold it on ebay on a Saturday night for $165. Then on the following Tuesday night bought a NGC MS-64 82 No P dime for $180. That dime is in my Roosevelt album.

Bought this 1799 raw for $900 about 2 years back.

It is by far my most profitable coin to date.........................BUT! I can't bring myself to sell it.

I have listed it a couple times but at a price that is above retail.

I guess that whats this bug biting thing is all about.

Enjoy:

One of the best - but back in 1978! I got about 12 Merc dimes from a guy in school who found a jar with them in it. He and I knew they were silver and he was asking 30 cents each for them. I paid. It was about a week later I looked them up in the Red Book and found the 1921 and 1921 D were worth a "little" more than .30!

Sorry no pics at present - they are not here with me and no car today!
