new here, invited by my mentor Bob "Not Mint To Be"...I was 6 or 7 shy of completing the 50 coin type set in XF or below, when I forced out of collecting a few years ago.

I really enjoyed looking through your slideshow on photobucket! We have the same "I get it, but most everyone else doesn't get it" gene haha. I love it when dealers deep discount those AG3's, saying 'for just $50 more you can have a beautiful (dipped out POC) MS65!'

That Sp Trail of yours is a beauty (as are the others), and is not accessible to many if even found in XF or less. Because of condition rarity, a PO-1 would probably bring as much or more as an MS 68 - if there is such a beast in either grade.

Keep on huntin'!

two_tonevf35 (Don) ... pleased to have you sharing with us on the CCF.

There was a time when your tremendous PCGS set of circulated commemorative were of great guidance to me ... respect whatever happened in your collecting life to cause a change in direction ...

LOL ... Bob is mentor to all of us in the pursuit of this set ... what a tremendous accomplishment he has achieved ... never to be repeated IMHO.

Have not kept up with the PhotoShop sideshow ... but you can view my current set on the PCG Registry ... Chesapeake Collection.

Appreciate your kind comments Don ... you know the market availability challenges of this set ...

Looking forward to whatever insights you choose to add to the CCF mutual joy of coin collecting.

If Don's circ commems had a "Pedigree" noted on them you would now see them is several of the current lowball sets. And multiple times for me.

Attended the Baltimore-Whitman show on Saturday 3/16 and visited all 150+ dealers on the bourse ... very little material available in circulated classic silver commemorative.

Plenty of the common issues available raw in circ state ... Columbian, Stone Mountain, Patriot, Lafayette, etc.

Came across an XF45 (my grade) Lynchburg for $190. Nice coin for a fair price ... but have that example already in my set.

Did note two certified Antietam at AU53 ... passed on them ... bummer that my VF/XF example shown a few pages above was returned as 'cleaned' by PCGS.

Did purchase for a whopping $15 a nice downgrade for my Washington-Carver half ... believe this 1952 (Philly) coin will grade in the VG range ...

My CCF want list is current ... appreciate any all all support to help find these difficult coins ...

Enjoy

Nice worn 52 GWC. It's to bad there wasn't a D or a S on it.

Long time without an update to this thread ... primarily because the 'new' coins have been very difficult to come by.

I am pleased to share a downgrade to my set ...

1937 Roanoke Island Half Dollar - PCGS VF25

Update-#4---Completed-Circulated-Classic-Silver-Commemorative-Type-Set

Very difficult coin to obtain in this state of honest surfaces preservation. PCGS has certified only 2 Roanoke lower than this example.

The PCGS XF45 Roanoke that I had prior has now found a new loving home with the ideal collector.

Despite my diligent efforts to continue adding to this set I have been unable to acquire any 'new' coins for quite a while now ... market availability on the remaining is very difficult.

Need six more honestly circulated commemorative to complete the basic type set:

Antietam, Elgin, Hudson, New Rochelle, Robinson and York

Sadly I have all of those less the Elgin in PCGS-Details (cleaned) holders.

On a somewhat related note, I have been studying my coin photograph and have taken my skills to the next level. I recently re-imaged all the coins in this set ... anyone interested can view all 44 coins at the PCGS Registry site ... Chesapeake Collection.

Enjoy

Nice downgrade! Comparing this one with your previous XF-45, it most definitely shows far less detail in Raleigh's portrait on the obverse and Virginia Dare's dress on the reverse.

Can't wait for you to downgrade again so we can all get to see a circulation grading set for the Roanoke!

Best of luck with your continued search!

Would be remiss of me to not mention my attempt(s) to get the PCGS wizards to certify my downgrade Lafayette Dollar.

Purchased on the Bay an ANACS certified FR02 example ... broke it out and the Wizards returned as Genuine-Damaged .. Rim Hits noted on the label.

Granted it has a bunch of rim hits ... my humble opinion is that the TPG should cut some slack to original surfaces well worn coins that have suffered some abuse in commerce.

Anyways ... I'll try this lovely example one more time at PCGS ...

Opinions welcome.

David, I remember when you bought that Lafayette.
I completely agree that considering the grade of the coin, some common sense needs to be used. The rim hits, though visible, are not damage. They are consistent with a coin of this grade and should not prevent it from receiving a grade of FR02 or lower.

Certified or not, its a great coin and we all wish you luck.

If it doesn't grade, feel free to send it my way. My dansco doesn't mind rim hits! ha
