I did to PCGS end of last week, just checked their site and they received it then looked at their population report for the 1992 Close AM and now there are two listed where there was only one just the other day Think it was MS63 RB? Just guessing it was my coin you never know. Excited to get it back!I will post pics as soon as I get it.

I got an e-mail they wouldn't grade it' they gave it a genuine 91- questionable color and assigned it PCGS #3096 thats all I got in e-mail, site didnt tell me anything different, as you can see in my pics it is odd colored in certain light and even looks different in others. I certainly didnt do anything to it,I guess it could of gone through the washing machine and dryer once or twice in its life. Why would anyone intentionally try toning a coin they thought was worthless! should the e-mail have indicated it was certified as a 1992 Close AM? or is that what the genuine means? or that they are certify its a 1992 penny? should it have said something in the variety box? ? all foreign to me

That seems odd. Any coin can be at least graded. Hope they put the variety designation on it. Might be worth a phone call to them.

Did you indicate on the submission form that is was a Close AM variety? (Does anyone know if you have to submitt it under the $50 fee for mint errors to get that designation on it?)

That would be dumb if it came back as just a genuine 1992 cent but no variety attribution. Although if they didn't think it was a variety, I would think they would just body-bag it if they thought there was a problem. If PCGS gives it the scarlet letter, I'd think about cracking it and giving NGC a chance because there's nothing wrong with your coin. It just shows the normal sort of discoloration that is common on a 20 year old zincoln.

Did you submit it for Variety Attribution($24 + tier grading fee)? If not, it will come back unattributed as a regular 1992P Lincoln Cent. Quote: Why would anyone intentionally try toning a coin they thought was worthless! I do not think anyone tried to artificially tone it, the color is just from normal environmental exposure issues typically seen on Zincolns but apparently PCGS had issues with it anyway.

Yes, what biokemist said! It makes me wonder if they realized exactly what the coin was. From what I recall, the first one was hand-walked as a priority through PCGS....being an ultra-rarity. If they just ran it though the graders as a regular 92 cent, I'm sure they didn't give it the benefit of the doubt. PCGS has slabbed ultra-rare coins with "issues" as problem free.

just called them(PCGS) they already sent my coin back. Yup they only certified it to be a 1992 cent and didnt holder it because I paid for secure plus service and they dont holder them as such if they dont grade ( hence the 91- questionable color crap.) So they said I could send it back (after explaining what the coin was )they would certify it as a Close AM variety (pay that fee)holder it,but not regraded , and they reimburse me shipping. To have it try to grade I would have to pay the whole deal again plus the variety fee and wouldnt guarantee it would grade.Hope they sent it back insured!paid for it.( I did tell her I expect to be reimbursed the secure plus fee as it wasnt holdered).Did they think I thought I had a pretty penny and wanted to sell it because of toning? or that I was odd to spend money to grade a worthless 1992 cent .I would think common sense on their part they should of questioned it with an E-mail or Phonecall.now should I send it back or send it elsewhere?

That's lame. It's not like you're trying to game them into a particular higher grade or something. Certifying a rare variety is a feather in their cap, so they really shouldn't be such dinks about it. Personally, I'd see if their competition has better service.

I don't know what they were thinking in your particular case, but I bet they see a lot of very common coins sent to them every day. For what it's worth, I too would have thought they would have checked for error varieties as a common practice, but apparently not. Now when the rest of us here send in an ultra rare coin to be graded, we too now know what to do. The suspense continues...
