SP - MS - Satin Finish - Coin Community Forum

tom96411 New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 06/03/2013 1:40 pm I'm looking at Guam quarters and am confused by the designations SP, MS, and Satin Finish. What is the difference between the three? Appreciate any help. Report this Post to the Staff

basebal21 Bedrock of the Community 13014 Posts	Posted 06/03/2013 3:17 pm The satin finish ones were the ones from mint sets. Those all have higher grades and rarely saw circulation unless someone cut them out and dumped them. The MS ones are the ones that were made for circulation. Those are the ones where the higher grades are hard to find. The SP is usually attached to the satin finish coins where instead of being ms68 they would be sp68 Report this Post to the Staff

Would it therefore follow suit that, say a Guam quarter, with a PCGS MS68 would be more valuable and cost more than a PCGS SP68 since the MS68 would be harder to find? basebal21 Bedrock of the Community 13014 Posts	Posted 06/03/2013 10:15 pm According to PCGS they define SP as Quote: Specimen (SP) â€" struck well like a Proof, but with a satiny, sometimes matte, semi-granular looking The satin proofs, some of the coins out of the special mint sets in the 60s, the 5 oz ATBs, and some canadian coins are the ones I can think of off the top of my head that have gotten the SP. It confused the heck out of me at first when I was looking for my Presidential dollar for my graded type set seeing satin 68s cheaper than ms 67s Report this Post to the Staff
