Is there a "surefire" way to tell a Proof Franklin from a BU?
I have a 1955 that I think is BU but could pass for a Proof in my limited experience with this series. Thanks in advance for tolerating a "noob" question.

Can you post a picture? That would help us.
If it is a proof, the fields around the portrait would have a noticeably mirror like quality. If it is BU, the fields will be frosty, similar to the picture that appears under your name.

and there will be no luster on a proof coin.

check for "cartwheeling" on the coin.

Thanks for the replies. It definitely exhibits the cartwheel effect, whereas a Proof Franklin that I have does not. I learned something new today. Thanks again.
