Quote: 3 SBA$ in snack machine Are most/many machines set up to even take dollar coins? I've never really noticed. My sense is that the slots are not configured to accept dollar coins. Is there a sticker or some indication that the machine accepts dollar coins? I'll have to pay attention to that instead of just deciding what geedunk to buy from the machine.

Many machines have slots large enough to accept dollar coins, and most of those accept them without a hitch, in my experience. Some machines have stickers that say "Presidential $1 coins accepted here" next to the coin slot, or even older ones have the "Use the Golden Dollar Here!" from 2000, when the Sacagaweas entered circulation.
Other times, the coin slots are only quarter-sized, or the machine rejects dollar coins despite the slot being big enough to accept them.

Most of the vending machines/self checkouts in my area take small dollars with no problems. A few even have slots big enough for halves, but they don't work. Before soda machines had bill acceptors, many would take SBAs. I think there was even a shortage of them, and that's why the mint made some more in 1999. I remember postal vending machines would even give you SBAs in change. The bill acceptors didn't become common until maybe 15 years ago. Now I'm starting to see card readers on the new Coke/Pepsi machines.

This week's farmers market change handouts totaled $210 of half dollars. One notable item that I got in one of the rolls was a half dollar that is plated in gold(?) 1986D. I assume it is a private thing from one of those promotions sold by Franklin or someone?
