Ghostrider, the mint did an initial striking of what looks like about 150K sets before sales began. That was probably the number that they felt comfortable with in terms of selling them all. A possible reason for two more dates is fitting the remaining sets into existing production schedules, otherwise there probably would only have been one more striking for the last 100K+ sets. The mint now says that fulfillment will take from July 27 to mid October and they restate the first-in, first-served policy.

I ordered 1 set... mint shows:
1 unit backordered. Expected to ship on 07/27/2012.

For all with the 7/27 ship date, there appear to be about 150K sets with that ship date and the mint has restated that fulfillment will begin on or about then and will follow FIFO as defined by the mint. It will probably take two or three weeks to get all of those orders shipped, helped somewhat by the fact that there are at least a handful of very large dealer orders I there. Whether or not all of the first striking sets will get shipped before the second striking ones are ready to go remains to be seen so we don't yet know it there will be any gaps in shipments. It is at least possible that the last of these sets won't ship until almost Thanksgiving, even though the mint is now saying that fulfillment will continue through mid October. If the mint can meet their goal, it will still take the better part of two months to get all 250K+ units shipped to buyers. I guess my main point is that even first day orders may take a week or more to ship once shipping actually begins and the other two ship dates are looking more like end dates instead of starting dates for their respective batches.

Did the mint post the official total sets sold before the 3PM EDT, or will it be updated later today?

They might update those numbers within the next hour then. Almost noon here in Pacific time zone so close to 3PM EDT now. I'll keep checking the Mint site to see if anything changes.

Here is my graph of the sales. The blue line is the running total, starting at 0 and ending at 251,302. The pink line is the daily sales with the average of three days shown each Monday. The yellow line is the daily average since the start, ending with a average of 8666 sets sold per day (assuming 29 days). The blue line's scale is on the right and the scale for link and yellow is on the left.

guess my original estimate of 250K was almost spot on - shocked there wasnt that many sold in the last day but I'm glad for it. the excitement was alot of fun and I know we all enjoyed seeing how it would play out

Quote: shocked there wasnt that many sold in the last day that was really odd to have the huge spike the day before and basically nothing the last day

If we combine the last two reports into one ~27 hour day (the first day was about that long), we get 6171 coins sold the last day and 44072 in the two previous days. While I expected a surge at the end I did not expect the surge to die out prior to the close of sales as much as it did. That said, I guess I am not that surprised by it either. Maybe it had something to do with the holiday or maybe people feared being shut out on the last day by huge volume sales. Whatever the reason, it was a very interesting occurrence. Here is my graph modified to combine the last two reports:

It was interesting, thinking back I guess it is logical to assume the surge would have been higher on the holiday. That said though it really did die fast and never would have guess about 5k of sales on the final days. At the very least thought it would have done another 15k at least

I thought about waiting till the last day, but I thought if there was a last minute rush, the site might crash, and I'd miss out. That could be why the late throng of orders didn't order on the last day.

Well, those of us who decided to buy this set own 2 of the (by far) lowest mintage #'s in the history of the 26-year series. Congrats!
I do love this series.
