@ DaytR, I'll do some pics soon. Things have gone a bit crazy on ebay of late: The 'error fake'/'fake error' £2 discussed above on 22.8 sold for £56.25, and that particular one hasn't been relisted, so apparently someone was either fooled or wanted it regardless... And this weekend, 2 not uncommon 'mule' fake £1 from large-scale makers sold for £13.50 and £26 respectively. In the former case, its edge engraving was an unusually fine example of its type, but I only know that from a direct inquiry (and no, I wasn't a high bidder on either). Also in the past week a 'new dies' mule Forth Bridge became the third in succession to sell for in the region of £10.

And just in the last few minutes a new dies series Menai Bridge/2008 eBayed for £52.99 including economy delivery. There were many comparison pics with a genuine Menai Bridge displayed so must have been abundantly clear what it was. Went up to that from under £10 including delivery just in the last 4 seconds.
Who are these people ? ? ?

It was new dies series (see discussion from p.8 onwards). I've never seen that reverse, in that series, depicted anywhere else, it ain't in RED's gallery. Though I've not been following ebay on this for long. It looked dull compared with the real Menai Bridge shown alongside, though I doubt it would have been made before 2008! Not even in this series which apparently includes a 'rare' 1971 dated £1 coin!

Just finished another site update last night. http://ukfakeanderrorcoins.50webs.com/index.htmNow over 400 examples. One thing I've noticed, which ties in with my other observations I suppose, is there seems to be a few older design, cruder design fakes turning up. For instance in the past three months I've come across 2 x Flax, 1 x Leek, 3 x Oak, 2 x Thistle, 2 x Lion Rampant & 5 x Royal Arms (older head) My conclusion, (taking into account the finding of 15+yr old coins in remarkably good condition over the past year or so) is that these older design, cruder fakes have been sitting in money boxes and change jars for years. I'm also hoping this is the case, as I'm still yet to add a 1988 Shield of Arms fake to my collection. (Anyone else notice this one on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181564342848 ... I was unsure whether it was an error or a fake, although leaning towards error.... the seller thought it was fake as he called it a 'Puond' which he has done in the past when selling fakes as 'errors')

@RED, I also think that 1988 was probably error, edge is so lifelike and that Roman type (edge motto) so hard to clone.
Are those recent 'well-preserved' finds mostly from a particular 'family' of fakes? I.e. could it be that some crooks had a stash of 'savings' they managed to offload through a laundering network after that network's more recent suppliers were busted?

I thought we had a Fake £1 thread somewhere but couldn't find it (60 day settings) Anyway... Incase anyone missed it... I'll be giving my site an update I've moved the gallery over to Flickr, so will need to relink everything.. Reason being Facebook blocks my web hosting server links ! However, for those interested, I've now made a Facebook Group and hosted all the galleries there. Also... Look what I had the pleasure of checking out the other day... New Fakes, that even work in NEW coin mechs ! Also... in reference to the Personalised 2011 £2 Lani coin thread... https://goccf.com/t/198440Here's a link to my fake £2 coins - http://ukfakeanderrorcoins.50webs.com/OTHERS.HTML

A few from the Midlands found over the last few weeks (but not so impressive) - (they seem quite plentiful at the moment)

Why on Earth does The Royal Mint not produce bi metallic One Pound coins? It is a bit like the U.S. Government tolerating very high quality counterfeit mass produced $100 bills made outside the U.S., being circulated outside the U.S. I guess far more money is wasted on war, anyway. Is that why they don't seem to bother?
