The wear is inconsistent with the lack of patina an 18th century coin normally has. Design flaws where there shouldn't: possibly cast coins. Quite a few bidders have been fooled unfortunately. It continues to astound me, how people can bid on something that is so beset by counterfeits and fakes. Especially from a guy with 5 feedbacks, all from selling golf clubs. dosmundos Valued Member Germany 194 Posts	Posted 09/26/2013 3:52 pm Well, I think not many people expect somebody to fake a rather common coin and "deface" it afterwards with fake chops that even detract more of the value. They are prepared to look very cautiously at rarer coins, know that there are counterfeiters, have heard of things like "altered mintmarks", maybe even seen them, and would never buy a 1,000 dollar item that's being offered at 100. But a common bust dollar, circulated and even with some of these illegible Chinese marks, come on, who on earth would counterfeit them? And bang, there we go... Report this Post to the Staff

I would say, though, another thing specifically regarding the pillar and portrait 8R - they are coins that draw a lot of "non-coin people"... The history buffs, pirate lovers, colonial enthusiasts, etc. That makes a large market of people who aren't very careful in picking out their one or two examples of genuine old Spanish pieces of eight pirate doubloons.
