Here is my newly-acquired Arab-Sasanian drachm minted in Sijistan. It dates to between 700 and 703 AD. I'm not super happy about the surface roughness, but I'm thinking that this guy has seen a lot in the last 1300+ years. The attribution is Album 38A.

Ready to move on? Tomorrow we start the decade 690 - 699 AD!

@finn, I'm not a huge dancing fruit fan, but this has been a pretty tough decade to get through so yes, dancing fruit is fine. I'm looking for some heavy participation from others moving forward on this thread as my coverage of the 5th, 6th, and 7th centuries is quite light. Very excited to see your Arab-Sasanian tomorrow!

Here is mine for this decade that I posted a while ago:

Umayyad Caliphate
'Abd al-Malik
Struck 693-697 AD
AE Fals

Obv:
Full-Figure Caliph standing, resting hand on hilt of sword, Arabic legends around (you can see it if you really squint)

Rev:
Byzantine "cross on steps" design with cross transformed into tootsie pop globe on pole. Arabic legends and mint marks surrounding.

This was made during the very short transitional phase between when the Umayyad Caliphate used Byzantine (or copies thereof) coins, and when they introduced the text-only coinage that would become the standard for the next centuries. This move was a blow to the Byzantines, who went to war with the Arabs and failed in subjugating them. The cross was removed here to differentiate their coinage from the Christians to the north, but the hardline prohibition against "graven images" was not yet in effect (hence the picture of the Caliph).

Clearly, there was some pent up demand for us posting the coins of the 690s AD. Now, on to the decade between 680 and 689 AD.

@collects82, nothing would make me happier for you to find your coin and post it to this thread!
