1862 Penny - L.c.wyon On Shoulder - Coin Community Forum

otto Pillar of the Community United States 1326 Posts	Posted 08/11/2016 10:42 am I have an 1862 penny. Going up the shoulder there are incuse letters. The first looks like "W" (or M); the second is a C; the third is hard to make out. I have tried in vain to find a readable example of the aforementioned penny, and I don't have the photographic tools to present a good enough image of my coin. Does anyone know of a good example of this coin? Can my description be of a common feature that I don't understand? Report this Post to the Staff

otto Pillar of the Community United States 1326 Posts	Posted 08/11/2016 4:41 pm I'll see what I can do about the pic. I realize the actual coin in question is very rare. I was hoping to find a verified example I could compare my coin to. My coin appears to have a 3-letter sequence, as described. The way the actual coin is described seems to imply that "Wyon" is spelled out. It's referred to as a "signature",rather than "initials". Does anyone know exactly what I should be looking for? I was finally able to find a good description of this coin, and mine assuredly is not one. The "letters" I saw are apparently wishful thinking. Probably are a partially worn design element.
