Probably water or oil on the field of the die.

I always thought that was caused by a thin layer of grease. Not the so called Greaser that we all know about by rather a "thin" layer of grease.

I'd say it's either a partially filled die or just some PMD scratches.

Under a 40X scope there is no abrasion to the surface, so I'm ruling out the PMD.
