Hi all! I wanted to get some opinions on authenticity before sending this one to NGC. Weight is exactly correct.

Counterfeit. Mushy details, raised bump on the 1 on reverse and field below the 1. Looks like a Lebanese cast counterfeit from the 1960's-70's.

A real 1887 gold dollar will not have so many raised bumps on the surface.

Take it back to the vendor you bought it from, it's a fake. Genuine US coins have far more detail.

You've been had.
Rest in Peace

Unfortunately true. Not a very good fake, actually.

At least if it's one of those 60s/70s fakes it was made from real gold - usually 14kt ish. Sometimes 18kt ish. So it has some melt value.

Thank you for all your help! I don't know these $1 gold coins well, but my suspicions have been confirmed. I will be returning it.
