Could I have some informed opinions on the attached photos of the mint mark on a 1938 Buffalo nickel. I purchased it from a dealer who said it was the 1938 D/S; however, under my microscope there appears to be two distinct 'D's over the 'S'. If so, would this be considered a double D over S? I'm still experimenting with photographing coins under my microscope using an external light source, so I apologize in advance for the quality of the photos. I used a couple of different colored light sources to see if the details of the mint mark would be more visible. Thank you for your time.

From what I can see in the pics, it does match the pic in the Cherry Pickers Guide for the D/D/D/S. Initially an "S" Mint Mark was punched, and then three subsequent "D" Mint Marks over it, very cool ! And a good catch, it should carry a better premium correctly attributed. Listed as Breen 2656 or FS 5c- 020.5.

And Welcome to the Forum !

As for the pics, they are not bad. A bit to small, but good detail. Take a look in the Photography forum for some tips, and always crop to the coin so you can get them as big as possible. Good Luck !

Hi,

YES:-) Sometimes called a D/S, this die variety is indeed a D/D/D/S

The pictures worked well.

Thanks,
Bill

One must remember that there are actually five D over S mint marks for this year, three of which do have multiple Ds. If you are inclined to purchase one, OMM-001 is the one to buy and commands the highest premium. A very careful inspection is also needed to be sure that it is indeed OMM-001.

Thanks for all the responses. Could someone tell what the term OMM-001 refers to? Thanks again.

I've gotten the 1938 D/S back from ANACS and they have designated it as a 1938 D/S OMM-1 MS 63. Does the over mint mark and die number 1 designation mean that this coin is a D/D/D/S variety? Also, where is the best source of information regarding scarcity and valuation of this coin? Thank you.

Looks like a great find.

And the correct variety.

jj:
There are quite a few varieties for this over mint mark, check yours against the listed varieties.
