what could cause this edge to be sunken nearly all the way around OBV and REV both?

Coin was formerly encased in a bezel or display container of some sort.

Been encased in a bezel. Just a damaged wheatie now.

An escapee Encased Coin. Just a damaged coin when they are removed from the encasement.
