ok I'm pretty sure that its a 1917 but I'm not sure if its a D or an S but would this be caused from a tired die

Agree this is a D mintmark. Probably struck from a worn die, but at this point in its life it's difficult to say for sure.

Could be from a tired die, but it could be a lot of things, such as extreme wear during circulation, over polishing of the die around the last half of the date and MM, or grease in the die creating a weak strike.
