Hello everyone, I have posted some stories about buying coins in Italy in the forum before, but this was a first for me... I am in Florence, from Rome, for the weekend. I went to an antique shop my first night here and the guy tried to sell me a 64 Kennedy for 25; telling me how beautiful and rare it is in the condition. It was AU. This is very typical in Italy. I went to a proper coin shop yesterday and they had a decent amount of pre 64 silver. The coins are pictured below... I'm expecting 35+ on dinged Morgans, 15 Kennedy halves, etc. No. He put everything on the scale, multiplies grams (about $7 face) by .90 and again by .70. I paid 115. This was particularly interesting I'll post the 64 Kennedy from the mint set, it had been opened and retaped, but it has mirror like fields. Then, about an hour ago, I visit another shop... And bought these... The guy starts up with "Fiori di conio" (MS) and rarity... Starts at 68...I explain in Italian ... A little back and forth... And we settle at 30. Interestingly, he wouldn't budge on 18 on a heavily polished Franklin half because he said it was in perfect condition. Makes no sense... And I doubt my wife will appreciate it...but members of this forum will ! Haha Edited by Roma2021 01/28/2023 1:07 pm

Some great pickups @roma. As you work your way around the country, consider adding some info here: http://goccf.com/t/261670My last couple posts on that thread were from Bologna, but it is always nice to have more entries for our world travelers.

That's a lot of shiny, lovely silver! Congrats!
Do you frequently come across old U.S. coins in Italy?

Thanks everyone. @celtic, yes. I find a surprising amount of it. And it's usually stupidly overpriced or underpriced. Part of this, I imagine, is collector base here is more varied (and obviously less u.s. focused). A lot of Italians collect ancients, Italian city state, medieval, and old European; I am friendly with only one another collector of American coins. This means I can buy silver at these prices, but it also means A LOT of 10, polished,1940s, Mercury dimes...
