Dirty Coins? - Coin Community Forum

metaldetectingtaylor Valued Member 136 Posts	Posted 08/26/2009 10:49 am As you can see by my username, I'm an avid metal detector. But 90% of the coins that I dig up are just plain filty. Especially the quarters who somehow turn a bright orange after being in the ground for so long. My question is will the bank throw a hissy fit if they see how dirty they are? I mean I clean all of the loose dirt off the coins so nothing jams their machines but aren't they obligated to take my change regardless if I have orange quarters black pennies and so forth? MikeThePenny Valued Member United States 321 Posts	Posted 08/26/2009 11:09 am I seen a few metal detecting guy use rock tubbler on their coins. They use water and fish gravel and Ivery. Change water maybe 2 times until almost clear. Umm do a youtube search on coin cleaning. Report this Post to the Staff
nod2003 Pillar of the Community United States 3294 Posts	Posted 08/26/2009 11:22 am I got a really beat up half dollar once that the bank would not take. I spent it at Quizno's so no real problem. Maybe just spend coins if they are dirty (assuming they are only worth face value) Report this Post to the Staff
SeatedNut Pillar of the Community United States 2797 Posts	Posted 08/26/2009 12:12 pm It was very long ago, but I had two rolls of quarters "charged back" to my account from my bank at the time (dumped them soon after). They were MD clad finds and orange. The bank had me put my name on the rolls when I turned them in. They resold them to a customer and that person complained. They debited my account $20. I asked them for the quarters back and they said they "disposed" of them. A couple of hours in a tumbler with crushed walnut medium will solve the problem. I'd recommend this route if you anticipate large numbers of them in the future. Of course don't throw any collectable coins in there. Report this Post to the Staff

Last time I went to the bank to cash in my filthy coins the woman was cleaning it out with a compressed air can and was telling another woman how it was making funky noises and that it didn't sound good at all so I'm guessing I trashed her machine by accident lol Report this Post to the Staff

Funny that I get several coins from them that are much more dirty, and the returned coins came from a bank! Report this Post to the Staff
