I dropped off a couple of packages at the post office today and when I'm there I always ask if they have any half dollars.

One nice lady there always keeps an eye out for me and gave me half a dozen or so today. One is a '94-P with some nice MD on Kennedy's ear. Another is a '72-S.

My question(s) are: Are all '72-S proofs? If so, are they all 90% silver? And regardless, is it common for Machine Doubling to appear on proofs, given their quality control?

Scobby:

All 1972S JFK'S are Copper/Nickel CLAD Proofs- No Silver.

After 1970 the next all Silver ( 90%) JFK half was not until the 1992S which is a Clad proof and also a 90% Silver Proof.

Don't know about the MD issues on proofs.

I have to respectfully dis-agree with your answer.

All 1972S JFKS are proofs, but they are not Silver- they have NO Silver in them at all- they are copper/nickel clad copper.

Chuckster, did you mean to say that after 1964, the next 90% silver half was the 1992 S ?

Yep!

After 1964 the next 90% Silver Kennedy half dollar was not made until the year 1992.

From 1965 to 1970 the Proof JFKS are 40% Silver Clad.
From 1971 to 1974- NO Silver Proofs
1976 Bi-Cenn were Clad Proof and 40% Silver Proofs.
From 1977 to 1991- NO silver Proofs- all Copper Clad.
1992 to present- Clad Proofs and 90% Silver Proofs.
