I was going through some of my archive coin photos and I came across this coin from an ebay seller. The coin was listed as an uncirculated 1900 DMPL and was up for auction. I won the auction for $102 as I was going to make a quick profit in a DMPL coin market that I knew nothing about. When I got the coin in hand, I could see that the fields were polished to make the fields mirror like. I did return the coin for a refund. The seller had a number of DMPL coins listed and sold that looked like the photo below.  Edited by Slider23

I don't know if I have a good record of my worst single coin purchase ever, because I usually sell them back off pretty quick. However, my worst purchase issue (the one that costs me the most money in the long run) is because I got excited to go after a new collection without thinking through my coin collecting themes and desires. I went off on a wild tangent buying post 1968 roosevelt proof pcgs 70 dimes to build a beautiful set. I had all of them...both clad and silver...before I realized I had no desire to have boxes full of slabbed coins of dimes in the form of a dime series. I mean...I bought dozens of coins without realizing my end goal. So I have since sold them off and especially after ebay fees, I lost money. Nowadays I do think through my desires a little better. I have been collecting slabbed type coins for 2 years and have yet to buy a single one, haha! Seriously, not one. But I am not there mentally where I can see the end game of that one and whether I will be happy with it. So I keep postponing. I did begin an album type book (7070) recently. But after thinking about it for six months. That will keep me busy for a couple of decades, so I certainly hope I don't change my mind on that one. |

Well, .... it was just a little less than 5 years ago when I decided to start learning about coins. I went to the local club's fall show ...got a lot of good advice and met some really nice people. But while I was looking over all the tables I spotted a Columbian half dollar. I had never seen one. My great grandfather helped to build many of the buildings for the exposition. So, of course, I HAD to have that coin. I paid $30 for a well-worn common coin with a great big gouge in the portrait. I didn't have a loupe or anything ....argh!  I expect I have over-paid at other times but that damaged half dollar is the one that sticks out in my mind. |

My worst purchase is easily a buy I had on ebay when I first started collecting. Some guy was auctioning lots of 1000 unsearched wheats. Some of his recent feedback stated they found multiple 1955 DDO. I got in a bidding frenzy and spend $81 on $10 worth of wheats. All common and literally 90% were 40s and 50s. The only thing that softened the blow was that I got a decent number of shiny AUs. Still a terrible purchase. I've had a few other rip off buys of unsearched wheats but nothing this bad! |

Worst was at a flea market where a dealer offered me a 1916D Mercury dime in possibly MS grade for $125. I grabbed it. Later found it was a really good fake. Saw him the next week and got my money back. |

My first few days of stacking I made some BAD choices. I spent about 100 bucks in total in auctions of those gold CLAD 1 gram bars. I thought I was making bank.

 Nothin comared to me... So the only place in town that sells coins is this pawn shop... Heres just some of what I have bought over the year... $35 for a cleaned AU Details 1922 Peace dollar$10 for 10 datless buffs $20 for 10 normal buffs $10 for 2 V nickels$14 for 2 absolutly destroyed silver certs (1935 and 1957, I belive) $10 for 6 wheat cents. Needless to say I never bought any more $15 for 4 Mercury dimes. Many details grades $5 for a cleaned VF details 1901 Barber dime$1 for an UNC bicentennial half... First thing id ever bought from them, got it even before I started CCF! $120 spent on CRAP, and I'm not even counting all of the purchases... My other coin purchases exceed $60, but they were actually pretty good deals so I didn't put them on my list. Good news though; I haven't been to the pawn shop in over 3 months  Mom mom wont let me, and I can see why... |

$35 on a set of Walker half (1945-S, with all sort of obvious marks in the fields) and - can't recall anymore - either common Ike dollar or bicentennial quarter. |

I'm sure we all have coins from the days when were starting out that we now question the value of; so I'll go kind to myself for some of those. But its a error 1982 missing clad that is details scratches I picked up a couple years ago that bugs me every time I see it in the coin box. Not sure why I let myself see through those scratches. Oh well.

I remember when I started buying off ebay when I started really collecting... I spent $300 on coins with $100 being a cleaned Morgan dollar (I forget which date I don't think it was anything special). Luckily I was able to return all but $40 worth of Buffalo nickels. I still have a couple of those I haven't resold. :P at least now I am, if nothing else, a better buyer on the internet :D lesson learned. |
