Open / Broken Nostril VAMs For 1878

The pics aren't the best and I know it is very difficult to determine the VAM by pictures but I was hoping to narrow it down some. I see the open nostril. It looks like the 5th star on the left is missing a point. I can't quite make out the marks above the date and between the 7 and 8. The reverse feathers seem a little weak as well. What 1878 8 TF VAMs have the open nostril feature? I see VAM 14.5 lists the open nostril as a diagnostic but the pictures On the listing aren't enough to determine if there is a Spiked A. If I could narrow the VAM possibilities, it would help to determine If this coin is a rarity. The seller has a no return policy and I have yet determined if the asking price is crazy or within reason. Report this Post to the Staff

SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 01/21/2012 2:51 pm It's VAM-21. They are, believe it or not, "common" in MS66 to the extent that anything is "common" in MS66. The price is, IMO, a few thousand dollars too high. An NGC MS66 went for $7475 at Heritage's FUN auction this month, but the previous sale of a 66, less than a year ago, was $4600. If I had this kind of money I would be bidding on the VAM-84 on Heritage right now, it is a MS-66PL by NGC and would be a TOP POP for this coin. Even though the VAM-84 is pretty common, it isn't in this grade, and actually any 1878-P-7TF above MS-65 is pretty hard to come by. This is a 7TF and they usually bring less than any 8TF but I bet this one will probably sell for around the price they are asking for that one, if not a little more Report this Post to the Staff

That thing is gonna go for stoopid money. It's absolutely gorgeous, and a slam-dunk 66. A PCGS 66PL VAM-82 sold for $8625 back in 2006, and I think this one will beat that. But not much more. Be minded, this is Condition Census, and a fantastic coin, but the audience is narrow and the potential exists for another to come out and downgrade your investment. The knowledgebase is not sufficiently developed to make this a slam-dunk investment; if it were me I'd be looking for a fairly quick flip if I'd had to wave $8000 at it. Report this Post to the Staff
