I've tried doing my own research on this, but am a complete coin collecting novice that happened to find this. It looks kind of like photos I've seen of Denarius? Have you ever seen a coin like this with the same engraving on both sides? What looks like Roman numerals or possibly Greek characters has been obscured by time or erosion or something...
