shanew Pillar of the Community Australia 1041 Posts	Posted 04/21/2013 02:31 am it is lead has FRANK SMITH across the middle and SIR JOSEPH BANKS PAVILLION around the eadge and a trace od a date 184? looks very old I thought it was a coin trial when I found it on the bottom of a tin of coins from the flea markets any help would be great I cant find anything about it on google Report this Post to the Staff

Sir Joseph Banks was a famous botanist, scientist and collector during the 18th and 19th centuries. His coin collection and to some extent his sister, Sarah's, was a significant portion of the foundation of the British Museum's coin collection; and parts of his other collections are to be found in other (mainly London) museums. There is or was the Sir Joseph Banks Pavilion, now part of Sydney Zoo, Australia - see http://news.google.com/newspapers?n...6998,6494723 Sir Joseph was pictured on an Australian banknote. As lead back in the day didn't have as bad rap as it does now. It would be cheap to produce and a profit could be made on the selling of them. Report this Post to the Staff

I have never seen this coin and even though it is battered I think it's amazing. I have attached a PDF about the history of the Sir Joseph Banks Hotel. Information specifically on the zoo is on page 6. Apologises for the quality, the scan is from a document made years ago. If you're interested about the site today, I found this blog entry online. In 1988 the council got funding to create sculptures of Zoo animals.
