Quote: Lost Ikes make me sad! Then I've got a good will story for you I stopped at the bank in the grocery store on my way home from work. I was just in there yesterday and pulled $60 in halves and dollar coins from the teller trays. I didn't expect them to have anything 24 hours later but I was in the neighborhood since it is supposed to snow and I had to get all of my errands done tonight. Anywho I waiting for my teller to count out $105 in dollar coins and haves that magically showed up from somewhere and the guy (may 30 or so) at the next teller over is cashing a check and asks if she has any silver dollars. Now I think maybe he is looking for Morgans and Peace dollars. He mentions that he used to have a big dollar but lost it. I have been carrying around the last 2 Ikes I have in my coin purse for almost 2 months now but haven't spent them for some reason. I tell the guy I have an Ike if he wants to trade it for a paper dollar. Not sure how much of the story if true or passe don folklore or what have you but he started telling me a story about a homeless veteran who had been picked up by the police for being drunk and homeless and he had a silver dollar on him and the police asked him why he didn't get a bed for the night with it and the guy told him that he had gotten the silver dollar when he made Eagle Scout (must have been WWI or so if the story is true and you could get a room for $1) Anywho I asked him if he wanted the 1972 or the 1974. He said 1972 as that was the same year as his old one. So I don't know if he was an Eagle Scout and someone had also given him a 1972 Ike when he made it and he carried it until he lost it or if the story was a spin on the old make sure you have a quarter for a phone call so the police won't run you in for being a vagrant (which is why I always had a holed Peace dollar on my key ring even going back 28 years ago when I was in high school) Anyways due to the unforseen and unplanned chain of events on my part tonight the guy now has another Ike. Funny how that happens sometimes.

I recently started carrying three pocket pieces at the same time: a crown-sized cupronickel (really ugly British crown), a crown-plus-sized copper (Catherine II 5 kopek), and a worn Victorian penny with an ugly brownish-green patina that I'm hoping will chip away.
I'll probably take out the penny if/when the patina does chip away, and I might take out the copper if it wears down too quickly. But the cupronickel crown is definitely staying; it's just too ugly. (It's the 1977 queen-on-horseback, incidentally. Can't figure out what's going on with the other side though - at least, other than "ugly".)

I had a friend whose Dad had a holed Gobrecht dollar as a pocket piece. I couldn't imagine carrying around that kind of value and putting wear on it as well.

I'm sure. It was Corrado Romano, founder of Worthy Coin. His collection was legendary and included a silver centered cent and was sold in a named auction by Stacks in 1985. This was told to me by his son, Don Romano.

I have two morgans that are plated. One silver and one gold. I was thinking about using one or both as a pocket pieces to wear off the plating. Do you guys think I will end up with decent looking coins?

I carry an 1879S Morgan. I think they are beautiful coins and I like the idea that someone 130+ years ago was carrying it too. I also have a 1912 Barber half fashioned into a ring that I wear.
