There are three reverse types for the Washington quarter used from 1932-1964. The regular business strike reverse being Type A, The proof reverse on business strike being Type B, and the Type C reverse is actually the new reverse die that was to be used starting in 1965 but was somehow used on some Denver minted quarters in 1964.

The type C is so far only found on 1964-D quarters , but Cherry Pickers recommends watching for the type C on any Denver minted quarters from 1956-1964 . Starting 1965 the reverse was type C for all business strikes, I am sure there are varieties and exceptions after 1965 too- someone else will have to explain those , I am not familiar with those.

There are a few identifiers on a Type C that distinguish it from a type A, I find the easiest way to tell is the detail in the tail feathers.

Type A tailfeathers are usually weak and flat with just outlines for the feathers.




Type C reverse tail feathers are more detailed and have a distinct centerline which the others do not have.




On a type A reverse the leaf that comes to the arrow tips is weak and blunt, not rising above the arrow tip.




On a type C reverse the leaf is strenghthened and pointed but does not rise above the tip of the arrow.
