Is this a die chip on the E or just a die crack?

Looked at it again, Abe. I think there is some Mechanical Doubling on the bottom of the "E", too.

I agree with error coins on this one. A nice long die crack through the E and on the devise you can see a strong chip forming on the top of the letter. Why is the chip higher than the letters itself. The lower part of the die was cracked into and the die is starting to disintegrate from continued use. The die will be continued to be used for some time after this happened. So the die material gets deep in that area leaving the planchet to be less shaped even leaving a chip higher than the devices. as the die crack even deeper a die break will form connecting the crack/chip into a large die break. Just a few strikes after that and another crack from the rim area, the die will split in two pieces leaving a Cud from that area where the piece of the die is now missing. Finally the operator notices the problem and then will remove the die.

I found about 60 like this back in Feb 07.
1st is die crack
2nd a chipped die
