Some of those African coins come across real worn don't they?
Their hot humid climate does a number on coins real fast. I bought a bag of African change coins last year and had Ghanaian Cedis from 1998 that had worn flat and a Kenyan Bimetallic 5 shilling from 2000 that was worn down to VG. Even worse was the seller told me, the coins were from her trip there in 2002!

Wow. I just watched a series of lectures on assessing the state of coins and how amazing it was for me when he said nothing about the coin below the XF40. He said that these coins are not of interest to the collector, unless, of course, they are rarities of SUPER, MEGA, ULTRA. I hope that there are no such people on this forum. I love all the coins, no matter how well preserved they are. I recently found out that in numismatics there is a whole area that specializes in collecting Lowball.

NGC gave that a FR2? Must have felt good about the R, because the O is gone! Lol
By collector, did he really mean investor?
For a collector, if a theme can be thought up, there is likely a niche enjoying it!
Lowball collectors, I contend, find a great deal of satisfaction in what they do. Might be some of the happiest in the hobby. Doesn't take much to thrill them.

Here's the only possible "lowball" coin in my collection. I've had this coin for more than 40 years and I don't think I'll ever get rid of it, as I got it from my Dad. I don't think it could be graded or slabbed because of all of the road rash. It's an 1887 Seated dime and possibly an S mint mark, but there's just too much damage to tell for sure.
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!

1881-S Morgan. The mint mark is just barely discernible.

@Yokozuna, how and when did your father acquire this? It looks like something he may have found on the street.
