i just completed my 6th box of nickels. I managed only one to fill my set. I pulled a 1939S. I have only 11 holes left to fill a complete set, (one of which is a 2010D.) so basically 10 left to fill. in this box I also got 3 Buffalo nickels. two of them were "dateless", and the third is a 1920 P . only the "20" are readable, the 19 is worn smooth. also zero foreign coins. |

Don't feel bad. I'm pretty much in the same boat. I'm currently going through my 14th box and still have 10 holes to go as well - one of which is 2010-P. So far, this latest box filled my 1948-S hole - not to mention a 1981 Taiwan 5-yuan coin. I have to admit I never thought I was going to have to start identifying Chinese pictograms - but there you go. Coin collecting as education - who would've thought?

stopped in the bank the other day asked for nickels, they said that they didn't have $40 worth to give me... they seemed to give me a dirty look so I left. I guess the $100 in nickels I had gotten earlier in the week was enough for them. Earlier in the week though they ordered me 2 boxes of halfs without much nudging. I had found 2 War Nickels from the $100 before |

This is quite a project. The last few months my interest has been sparked in searching nickel rolls to complete the entire Jefferson set. I have searched about 40000 nickels so far and I have five left: 1938d, 1942s, 1943d, 1950, 1950d. I have found 5 Buffalo nickels: 1937, 1937d, and three dateless. My two best finds were an XF 1939d and a VG 1890 liberty head. |

just completed my first box of nickels. It yielded the following: 2 Silver War Nickels20 1959 and older (oldest was 1938D(not a buffalo)) a total of 28 keepers..I was happy with 2 silvers. Are S mints rare for nickels? I had probably 100 of them..I didnt keep any, I just noticed I got a lot. Thanks! -Alan |

hey, I really don't care about any of the jeffersons that aren't War Nickels, so I'm wondering: now that I've got a few rolls worth of 50+ year old nickels, can I sell them for anything above face? |

The only ones that matter are the 50-D, 54-S/D, 55-D/S.
Oh, 49-D/S too. Given they are average circulated as are often found in rolls. The rest, a few cents above face.

I see bags of 40 1950's Jefferson nickels sell sometimes at local shows. Not sure if they do in your area. |

They can be worth a bit more, but they're hard enough to sell that it's not really worth it. If you're really just interested in silver, I suggest searching more dimes or halves. Much easier and more time efficient to stick with a denomination that you can edge search. The AU 39s aren't really worth too much either. Shield nickels would be nearly impossible to find - all over 125 years old. Even V nickels are rare enough that after 43 boxes, I haven't found any. A number of folks that have posted here have pulled a few Vs though. |

yeah, the problem is that I'm actually not JUST looking for silver...but I am only interested in keeping the silvers (or really old cool stuff)...my new infatuation happens to be the War Nickel. |

Pick up a bag ($200) of Nickels. The teller told me that there were lots of 40's in there when she unroll the coins to the bag. From the pile I finished, about a third are pre-60s. I will post the results later.
