Well I just started searching nickels as well. I did a box two days ago and got 2 buffalos and a War Nickel. so I did two more boxes today and got nothing :/ Its okay though because I am starting a complete collection of nickels, so I need every year and mint mark, so even though I got no great coins I did find keepers for my collection :) |

I've done close to ten boxes of nickels. No V-nickels or Buffs yet. Have found 6 War Nickels. |

What's the scoop on the vinegar soaking for no date buffalos? I have probably three rolls of those guys which just sit around in a nickel box. Does soaking these nickels affect the coins appearance?

I have gone through about 80.00 in nickels and have found 1 silver War Nickel (the 3rd coin of the first roll that I was just counting for correctness, that led me to search all rolls) 1 1942 non silver, 5 buffalo (3 in one roll of all mixed coins from the buffalo to 2010) a few 1938 amd 1939, 10 from the 1940s and quite a few from the 1950s. I will continue since there are many old nickels out there yet. These were all machine wrapped (4 buffalos in them) for the most part (8 rolls hand wrapped.) I guess I have been having good luck so far. I did get 140.00 in nickels for my birthday! What was just going to be a stash of some nickels 'just in case' turned out to be looking for old coins to complete a collection folder (as well as keeping all the rest) |

nice finds angel, but don't be discouraged if your next $100 has nothing good. it happens.

Thanks, yes I realize that. My feelings are that whatever I find is great. I do want to keep a few hundred dollars in nickels just in case. The old coins are just icing on the cake, like I said I never would have thought so many old coins until I thought about it. Nickels are really the only coin that has not been gone through for silver or copper. And I think some are bringing in old cans/jars of coins to the coin counters without checking them. That's the only thing I can think of for so many mixed in. It's not like one roll of old coins every so often just mixed in.

To answer gmwatson's question, soaking dateless buffalos in vinegar may cause them to look slightly pitted, but not too bad. I certainly think this is better than a dateless Buffalo.
I've heard that white vinegar is the best to use, but I used apple cider on my two coins, and they turned out fine. One was a 1926, and the other was a 1917-S, which is a pretty good find. They soaked for about 2 weeks.
If you were going to try yours, I would suggest doing some Philly mint first, just so you know you have the technique down, and if you don't, not many Philly mint coins are worth much anyway...

I have gone through 72 rolls so far and have 1 War Nickel, 5 buffalo, 3 1938, 1 1939, about a roll of 1940s, 33.00 in 1950s, I have over a roll each of 1964 and 1964D, and combined for the remainder of the 60s about the same. I guess 1964 had a lot of nickels. Maybe since everyone was taking out all the other coins nickels were left! I have at least one coin for each year so far except the proofs. This became a project where I thought I was just going to pick up a few hundred dollars in nickels and just put them in the back of a closet. It reminde me of going through coins in the 60s as a young child. Over the years since then I have found some silver coins and kept them aside but I really haven't gone through our current coins due to their not really having intrinsic value. I guess it's time to check and save all coins. All have some type of intrinsic value. |

I went to my local bank to buy my first box of nickels a few weeks ago, and I discovered that they don't get them, because they roll their own nickels instead. So I bought 50 rolls and I found 171 1963 and older nickels (8.55%). Unfortunately, there were no 1938, 1939 D&S, silver War Nickels, or 1950 D. |

I've also had 'filled D' on some coins esp in the 70s. anything on those? Thanks. My coin book price guide doesn't list many errors or even much value for 70s on. I have Official Blackbook price guide for US coins. There are high prices for 1994P and 1997P but I'm not sure what to look for. |
