I typically only report my finds from nickel roll searching at 50,000 coin increments, my last update was at 450,000 and I plan to post another shortly, after I have searched 500,000 coins. However, I feel that a separate posting is warranted for a single find.
Today, after searching 478,300 nickels, I found something remarkable: a 1950-D. Pictures are attached. Its not a spectacular specimen, probably only F-12, or so, but it is a 1950-D, nonetheless. The coin was face down in the roll, so I saw the "D" mint-mark and had no expectations. I knew it was probably from the 50's by the reverse, but I did not expect that it was a 1950. Every time that I have found a 1950 face-up, I have expected it to be a 1950-D, and of course, it never was.
Now my circulation set lacks two coins: 1938-S, and 1939-D. A friend who has searched nickel rolls for decades predicted that I would find a 1950-D before I found a 1939-D. He was correct, although he does find it odd that I have not found a 1938-S by now.
