I went through 20$ last night, found 2 '42's no discernible mint mark. Does make them NOT War Nickels? Are they silver? thanks, C.K. |

No, those are not silver. The switch to 35% silver was official on October 8, 1942, so most nickels from 1942 will not be silver. They will be the 75% copper/25% nickel composition. Either way, a 70-year-old coin is cool to have.

Wow, how random. I was just reading that post about the 1942, I'm at work on my phone... I just opened the cash register and found a 1942 non silver as well.
Still have an unopened box sitting at home, but homework is more important :(

So to be a War Nickle it has to have the mint mark on the reverse?
Yeah, it is neat to think about all the different things it purchased over the years.

In 1942 they did have phili and denver mint jeffersons that weren't silver. If it is the non silver is should have the mint mark next to the monticello like all the other older jeffersons. And that's only for the denver one, of course the phili coins had nno mint marks then. |

type inbetween those two quotes whatever you want to be quoted. Make sure you get rid of all of the periods I typed. Those just make it so it does not work so I can show you. Make sure the second one has the backslash.

Wow, you do that many boxes in one week? Man I wish, I just dont have enough time for that. How many holes do you have left to fill? Are you trying to complete a set?

Time for dancing fruit! My best box so far.    Box #64: 3 silver, 2 buffalos, 1 hole filler 19? buffalo 19? s buffalo 1940 1941 (x2) 1941 s 1942 1942 p silver (hole filler!) 1943 p silver 1943 s silver 1946 d 1946 s 1948 1952 (x2) 1952 s 1954 d (x2) 1956 d (x2) 1957 (x2) 1957 d (x3) 1958 d (x2) 1959 d (x2) 2009 d (x3) Foreign: 1988 20 cents (singapore) 2000 10 centavos (guatemala) That leaves 4 holes left to fill: 1938 d, 1939 d, 1950 d, and 1955. Feels good since my last hole filler was box 33. That also completes my date set of War Nickels from circulation! Edited by murrellington

Actually, those boxes were from this weekend including Friday evening. I do not have cable so I have nothing else to do with my time in the evenings but search boxes. I also search halves and dimes as well (1 box of halves a week and as many CWR's of dimes as I can find). I search one box of nickels a day as well during the week. I had gotten a couple of extra boxes on Saturday for Monday since it is a bank holiday. I later discovered that my bank will be open on Monday so I went ahead and searched the two extra boxes and will get another one tomorrow. I only have half of a Danso album filled but I am only filling it with gems that have at least five steps so it is going to take a long time to finish but hey I got plenty of time. |
