Thoughts On 1987-P Lincoln Memorial Cent / LMC With Partially Filled 9?

halfamind Pillar of the Community United States 1512 Posts	Posted 02/15/2021 6:42 pm Here is a 1987-P Lincoln Memorial cent that was pulled from circulation soon after release and has been stored in a 2x2 for about 33 years. Pix will probably not help resolve the question, but note the partially filled "9" in the date. Under close inspection, it appears to be a linear bit of metal; however, the "9" is not completely filled. Since the coin was plucked immediately from circulation after the anomaly was noticed, I don't think it's a problem with zinc rot or related issues (the 9's filling looks like solid metal, not porous or bubbled). Any thoughts? Note: coin was not removed from 2x2 for photos; thus, there may be some reflection from the plastic covering. * Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. * Report this Post to the Staff

I've always thought it looked like a die chip, but I never had the guts to poke at it to see if was just a bubble. Unrelated, there also seems to be a bit of doubling (or shadowing) on the "7" in the date, at least on the close-up view in the photograph. Report this Post to the Staff
