Something went wrong in 1985. Both the Philadelphia and Denver mints churned out a lot of dimes looking like that. As a kid searching rolls, I was finding them in a nearly uncirculated state, so I knew it wasn't PMD. I started saving them until I realized that I was seeing too many for them to be rare.

If you search around on here, you will find some discussions about this issue.

If this coin is wider than normal, it may have been flattened. If it were broadstruck, there would be no reeds on the outside edge of the coin.

Coop,

Is there a "last word" on what caused this with the '85 dimes?

I have seen some debate about these here and elsewhere. Mike Diamond, you, and some other knowledgeable folks have weighed in on this subject on one of the threads I linked to above.

A typical look for 1985-D dimes. I attribute it to a combination of excessive die convexity (a design flaw) and inadequate planchet upset.

I think I remember a conversation like this when a few of us was posting MAD dimes. This is MAD I bet.

Thanks!

A 35+ year old question for me.

Thus why so many dimes look like that. (possibly all?)
