I found this penny in one of my old Lincoln Penny collecting books and I believe this is not actually a 1914 D penny, but rather a 1944 D penny that somebody tried altering by scratching off the rest of the first "4" in "1944" to try and make it look like a "1".

What do you guys think, am I on to something here?

I would say you are absolutely on to something here. You can see the gouges they made getting rid of the 4; one of the gouges ran down and nicked the mintmark.

See these quite often.
It is a 1944d cent that someone has tried to make look like the more
valuable 1914d cent. The 1 should be centered between the 9 & 4 on a genuine 1914.
For the record, that is a very poor attempt.

Yep, that coin really throws the red flags up. Bad attempt

EDIT: Here's a comparison to show what @JimmyD stated (Finally got it to post from ebay)

Throw out "Potentially" from your title and it will be correct.

Agreed - fake. Tooling marks and remnant 4 also are a dead giveaway.

So, you have a clearly butchered '44 D made to look like a '14 D. It was a poor hatchet job, really. Cool find of a failed counterfeit attempt, 2x2 worthy.

One more eency weency detail to note here. A genuine 14-D would have no VDB on Lincoln's shoulder. (On a side note, I also have a 42-S Lincoln altered to a 1912-S, but same diagnostics apply there).
