1lostcoin New Member United States 24 Posts	Posted 12/28/2010 08:48 am Can anyone tell me what is a 2003 $5 Norfed Liberty Silver Certificate? I saw one on ebay for $2.25 and wasn't sure what it is. Are these like the old $5 dollar bill silver certs? Are they a bond type silver cert. that has been cashed in and no longer any good? Thank you for the information. Report this Post to the Staff

NPCoin Valued Member United States 108 Posts	Posted 12/28/2010 12:10 pm The NORFED Silver Certificates were privately issued "currency". Technically, these would be deeds of title as the certificate transfers title to a specified amount of silver to the bearer. Since NORFED is now defunct and their assets seized by the federal government, these certificates hold purely collectible value only. I should add that PCGS did, in fact, previously grade and "authenticate" these certificates. These "graded" specimens do seem to carry quite a collectible premium to them. See this archived thread from when it happened. Today, surviving "coins" are still worth a premium over bullion due to their novelty value, surviving "notes" have novelty value only. I wonder where I was when all of this was going on. Shows you how much I was paying attention to the news. I went ahead a bought the certificates. I figured what the heck. I liked the looks of them and maybe if they happen to win the lawsuit you might get some money back for them. Not holding my breath on that though. Mainly I just thought it would be cool to have.
