Hi, I have a 2006 South Dakota Quarter where one of the outer layers of the nickel alloy is missing and is struck directly on the copper layer.

toro272000 - Have you weighed the coin? There are three possibilities for why a coin is copper colored. Missing layer - chemical treatment (post strike) and a sintered planchet. The first should be underweight - the second correct weight and the third very slightly heavy.
