I purchased a collection on Thursday. In viewing the coins, I found two 1984 proof sets with what appear to be triple "S" mintmarks on the cent. Does anyone have information on these? Has anyone cataloged them? What's their value? I've received several replies, unfortunately, my photo uploading ability on my IBM PC is non-existent. I'm not familiar with my wife's MAC to do photos. The mintmark is tripled to the left. I believe that MM were put directly onto the die at manufacture rather than after. This process started after 1982, I think. I do not believe it to be Strike Doubling, as none of the rest of the obverse lettering or numbers are doubled. Edited by coingye 07/23/2006 3:44 pm

Hi coingye
Welcome to the forum !!
I have no listing for any OMM's for the 84-S cent,,
I cannot discount that there maybe a coin or coins like this since in 1984 the MM was still being added to the working die by hand, this changed in 1985 for the proof coins ,when the MM was added directly to the production Hub.
Im afraid without pics any answer would be speculative .

Here we are! Coingye.....I had to shrink my picture under what is allowed. I think that's the reason why you could not upload your pictures. Try doing that by editing your picture so we can see what you have. Anyhow, tell me what you all think! What would you pay for something like this one? Let's just say you had an opportuniy to acquire this, what would anyone be willing to pay? Not that I'm selling it or anything. I guess we are wondering what it might be worth. I have seen a number of these and do not believe them to be an RPM. They also exist in similar form on 1982 and 1983 proof cents. They are a form of Machine Doubling.

RPM or not, it is a fine piece of error. Wouldn't you all agree? It's doubling is just awesome.
